Job Description:

Director of User Experience and Site Optimization

The Director of User Experience & Site Optimization will lead VistaPrint's European team of information architects, site optimization and usability specialists in developing world-class user interfaces based on iterative design, testing, and customer research. The team leads user interface design for our 14 localized European web sites.

Your objective is to drive improvements to conversion rate, average order value, and lifetime value of VistaPrint's customers. That means you will develop and execute long-term strategies to enhance the site user experience and drive business performance.  You will also conduct rapid-fire testing of new concepts in response to opportunities identified through our site optimization process. These opportunities are identified through such ongoing analysis as competitive research, usability studies, site metrics, customer feedback, employee suggestions, and others. You will develop business cases related to advancing the functionality, usability, and business performance of the website. You will liaise closely with our user experience and site optimization team in North America.

You proactively track and communicate website business performance using internal reports and tools.  This requires you to work closely with our site optimization and site marketing teams to identify short-term performance issues and long-term opportunities; suggest solutions that address customer and business goals.

Roles and Responsibilities

Strategic Thought Leadership:  Develop user experience strategies for new website capabilities; evolve critical areas of the VistaPrint website to improve the experience and drive business value.  Foster innovation in user experience design to solve business problems while developing UI standards as needed to ensure consistency and drive efficient solution development.  Create prototypes of future-state site interfaces ("vision-ware") to gain alignment with executives, stakeholders, and partners.  Represent the user experience team on the leadership team for several high-profile strategic initiatives.

Team Leadership and Growth:  Build and lead a team of information architects and user experience specialists.  Optimize team structure and scale the team as needed to meet demand for user experience design and customer research company-wide, including new products, new site functionality, partnerships, and strategic internal applications.  Develop a scalable model for on-boarding new hires and a roadmap for the team's continuous improvement and ability to leverage and adapt to new technologies.

Demand and Process Management:  Oversee user experience staffing and manage demand for the team's services, prioritizing as needed based on business value of various projects.  Define, establish, extend, and communicate global user-centered processes and standards.  Work closely with leaders globally from product marketing, web creative, and technology to optimize the process, deliverables, and standards.

Project Oversight: Ensure delivery of high quality, high performing user experiences through application of successful customer research and iterative concept testing. Provide direction, oversight, and quality assurance for team deliverables.   As needed, play a hands-on role in design activities and customer research.

Communications:  Communicate to executives and other key stakeholders the strategies driving the user experience, a vision and roadmap for future improvements, and provide ongoing status updates across initiatives.  Serve as subject matter expert for user experience across the organization globally.  Work closely with such internal partners as product marketing, creative, capabilities development, and our European user experience localization teams.

We are looking for a seasoned user experience strategist and designer with a proven ability to deliver high performing user interfaces for e-commerce sites across Europe. Our candidate must be a hands-on, inspirational team leader with executive-level communications skills, strong business acumen, and ability to develop and articulate UE strategies and guide the creation of compelling user interfaces.

Qualifications and Experience:

  • BA/BS degree in human-computer interaction or other relevant discipline, MBA desirable.
  • 7-10 years hands-on experience in information architecture or website interaction design, with 3-5 years leading user experience teams; consulting experience a plus.
  • Solid understanding of user-centered design processes and ability to balance customer needs with business goals in developing solutions.
  • Executive-level visioning, strategic development, and influencing skills and experience.
  • Experience leading and/or observing user research and usability testing and in translating results into design decisions

  • Strong interpersonal, meeting facilitation and presentation skills. Ability to clearly articulate ideas through written, verbal, and visual communications.
  • Inspirational team leader with experience building high performing teams.
